THE ARTS

With technology making information readily accessible, today’s children—“digital natives”—face the unique challenge of processing, applying, and creating with this vast wealth of knowledge. At La Paz, we recognize the vital role that the arts play in nurturing creativity and innovation. Therefore, they are embedded into the learning experience as a core course from preschool to 12th grade. Through this holistic approach, we not only foster a profound appreciation for the arts and a strong cultural awareness, but also prepare our students to become creative and innovative leaders capable of making meaningful impacts in an ever-evolving world.

THE VISUAL ARTS

Students will dive into the basics of Art & Design, learning key art vocabulary, exploring different artistic styles, and discovering influential artists and movements. This journey will set them up for success in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Visual Arts program at both Standard and Higher Levels. Depending on their grade level and artistic abilities, students will get hands-on experience with a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, media art, and more. Each student is required to keep a sketchbook to capture their creative ideas and growth along the way.

MUSIC

The music program is designed to help children and young adults understand that music is all around us, in every aspect of life. Through engaging with a variety of mediums—such as voice, percussion, ukulele, marimba, and electronic recordings—students will come to appreciate the rich musical heritage of Costa Rica and the diverse sounds from around the globe, nurturing their musical abilities while fostering creativity and cultural awareness.

DRAMA

The school’s drama program is designed to ignite students’ creativity and communication skills from an early age, guiding them through a rich journey in the world of theater and ensuring they are well-prepared to excel in the IB Drama course offered in 11th and 12th grade. From the start, students engage in performing, storytelling, and the intricacies of costume and set design, while also studying various theater traditions that deepen their understanding of diverse cultures. As they progress, they gain exposure to both the artistic and technical aspects of theater, allowing them to explore and discover their own preferences, strengths, and abilities. This comprehensive approach not only fosters a deep appreciation for the art of theater but also helps students recognize their unique place within this vibrant creative environment.
